Farewell to Manzanar
In the autobiography Farewell to Manzanar, Jeanne Wakatsuki is a young Japanese girl who lives in Long Beach. The majority of this book tells about the life right before and while the family is living in Manzanar. When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, Jeanne’s father is taken away and her mother moves the rest of the family to Terminal Island, where they live with other Japanese Americans. Jeanne, who has never been around many Asians is taken aback and a bit intimidated by them. Jeanne’s mother and older sisters have to go to work at a celery packing plant. Soon after this, the government relocates the Japanese Americans to a ghetto in Los Angeles called Boyle Heights. When the family has finally gotten used to their new home, they are once again moved, but this time they are going to the Japanese Internment Camp, Manzanar.
