Man Versus Nature

“The human brain needs only to become fully aware of its powers to conquer even the elements” became the corner stone of Leiningen’s life plan. The human brain is powerful and controls all of a person's body, actions, purposes and emotions. Without this controlling source nothing would work as it relates to man. In the short story, Leiningen versus the Ants, by Carl Stephenson, Leiningen, a British plantation owner, followed his motto to help him overcome the many acts of god. Leiningen had met and defeated the elements that had come against him, unlike his fellow Peons who were struck with fright. A twenty square mile army of ants threatens Leiningen’s plantation and the lives of all who live there. The ants prove to be a formidable opponent, even for a man as cunning as Leiningen. They represent the power and unpredictability of nature—a perfect example of an environmental conflict.
