Male Dominance

Abigail Adams, a famous feminist of the late 1700’s once said that “women must work together to achieve equality in a male dominated world.” The word feminism is defined as female pride or equal rights and opportunities for women. For years, women have worked diligently to obtain equality in an often male dominated society. This assertion has frequently been a topic of discussion in famous works of literature for years. Two famous female authors, Sylvia Plath and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, both suffered mental illness problems and each wrote somewhat biographical accounts of their lives in two of their most famous works. The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath, and “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, both display the lack of feministic qualities through the main female characters that suffer mental illnesses and often find themselves under the control of men.
