Maggie girl of the streets

Stephen Crane’s story Maggie: A Girl of the Streets demonstrates how terrible life could be in the slums of Rum Alley in the early 1800‘s. Life is not always as glamorous as it may seem. The protagonist of this story tries to escape life in the slums, by dating a someone with more social superiority. With this thought ,Maggie’s romantic inability to see the world clearly leads to her down fall.
Merriam-Webster defines innocence as freedom from guilt or sin through being unacquainted with evil. Innocence is a valuable virtue to posses is ones life, and Maggie posses the virtue until she starts to date Pete. She starts her life free from sin, but with time this virtue in her begins to fade. She is brought up in Rum Alley by to alcoholic parents . Maggie’s mother is “ allus poundin’ ’im” (Crane 7). At an early age, Maggie herself is innocent, but she lives among sinners.
