12.3 Task two
Our view of life can be enriched by our engagement with a text. A text will sometimes challenge our pre-existing values, encouraging us to reconsider our attitudes towards people and events. Through an analysis of the values and attitudes portrayed in “Shine”, explain how the text positions us as viewers to re-assess certain attitudes and values.

When we speak of values, we are speaking of the things around us that we rate highly, that are important to us. We are very much products of the time and society in which we live because the values of the society in which we live will to a large extent determine our own values, however they may differ to some degree. Texts can be studied in terms of their characters and what their construction reveals about the society at the time. Shine is a feature film where the main protagonist, David Helfgott, reveals values that often challenge the values of the 90’s audience.
