Act I, Scene i

1. The play commences in the midst of thunder and lightning, a common pathetic fallacy used to represent evilness and impiety. The witches further promote the theme of sin and immorality by their mere presence. They help to establish an eerie atmosphere by their paradox verses such as “Fair is foul, and foul is fair…” (Kortes 9). Hence the setting is very creepy and uncanny due to supernatural presence of the witches and the gloomy surroundings.

2. The witches convey important information about the outcome of the civil war and where and how they plan to encounter Macbeth. This information also informs the reader of the power the witches possess and how their minds function.
