Lyrics Analysis

The two songs I chose to analyse are “ The Great Disappointment “ written by Davey Havok from AFI and performed by AFI, “ Hollowed be thy name “ performed by Cradle of Filth, writer unknown. The theme that I thought was the most important in both of these songs is disappointment. I will be discussing how this issue is presented and developed in these two songs by comparing, contrasting and using intertextuality. To help me, I will be using three main conventions Structure, Music and Lyrics.

The “structure” contains three main parts verses, chorus and ordering of ideas. “ The Great Disappointment” has three main verses and one main chorus while “ Hollowed be thy name” has ten verses and no chorus which gives us a feeling as though the narrator is telling us a story rather then a song. In both of the songs the ordering of ideas changes from positive to a negative.
