Love: Free or Oppressing? “Love: Free or Oppressing?” Mrs. Schlie American Literature Rebecca Kaaz October 3, 2003 Kaaz-1 “Love: Free or Oppressing?” Webster’s Dictionary defines love as “an emotional, romantic feeling towards a member of the opposite sex.” I think of love as a commitment, somewhat like marriage, which is a very serious commitment. The poem “To My Dear and Loving Husband” by Anna Bradstreet is an excellent example of love freeing a person. Bradstreet describes the extreme amount of love she has for her husband through the commitment of marriage. Through this love, she is free; she is not unhappy and oppressed like some people who are in unhappy marriages. Genesis 2:24 says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and they will become one flesh.” Because of your commitment to love and marriage, something new has come into being.
