Lord of the Flies

In the modern world we live in today, alienation and the search for our true identity are important issues. The text ‘Lord of the Flies’ is therefore relevant to young readers as it raises these issues. The author uses gaps and silences and certain discourses that are sometimes difficult to understand making the text a challenge, however many of the ideologies and cultural assumptions explored in the text remain relevant.

Because cultural assumptions shape our world, one of the reasons the text ‘Lord of the Flies’ appeals to its readers is the fact that it can be related to, helped by its inclusion of cultural assumptions. An excellent example of a cultural assumption is the way that body image leads to alienation.
‘…that Piggy was an outsider, not only by accent, which did not matter, but by fat, and ass-mar, and specs, and a certain disinclination for manual labour’ (Golding. 1954: 81)
