THE BEAST



Manifestations of fear have been firmly lodged in the impressionable minds of the juvenile survivors. These manifestations were originally the product of the vivid imagination of a littlun and now take the form of a bloodthirsty beast in the psyche of each of the youngsters.

The boys believe the lifeless body of a fighter pilot, which had drifted onto the island by parachute, to be a creature of extreme ferocity and the source of their nightmares. Efforts have been made by some of the boys such as Ralph to put to rest the fears of the other boy, but this has been to no avail and therefore an investigation into this case has been proclaimed.

The investigation, however, established the existence of the beast when they encountered it on top ...
