Ralph is twelve years old with blond hair, and is the most charismatic of the group. He has a privileged background as his father is in the navy, this will make him think he can lead the boys. Ralph has various qualities in the way looks and is described in the book as being built like a boxer. This will make him feel physically comfortable and well able to attract others. Being able to attract others will help him to be voted leader, as people want a leader who is strong.

It doesn’t bother Ralph that there are no grown ups on the island, this shows that he is adventurous and independent. Ralph’s first instinct is to have fun and to swim but his other friend Piggy has the logic and brains to think that they could be here until they die but Ralph just thinks it’s his island and wants to explore!
