In this essay, I will discuss the inner fear, the ability to perceive and the civilization of the boys in the novel. I argue that society and individuals don’t change because of one person’s opinion.

First, I will discuss how that face paint is used as a symbol. In this s novel, the face paint is used as a way to hide from their consciences, turning them into nameless savages who are freed from civilized behavior “I agree with Ralph. We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are best at everything. So we’ve got to do the right things”(page 42).
