After discussing the topics of the island with the boys that have returned home safely recently, it is apparent to me that their society began turning to chaos after Jack became power hungry. According to the children, he was so concentrated on power and violence, that he eventually forced the bulk of the population to join his tribe, and caused many of the island’s problems. However, I have concluded that man is inherently neither good nor bad. People can change their behavior based on the situation around them. And because of this, in addition to the lack of adult supervision, the children began to behave poorly. While Jack did instigate many of the problems, he is not completely responsible, because of the circumstances. With these extreme conditions on the island in mind, and the fact that chaos was practically unavoidable, the acts of the children don’t’ seem so barbaric. However, they do need extreme rehabilitation to rebuild themselves both physically and mentally.
