Lord Cornbury

New York's earliest alleged transvestite governed colonial New York for the British as early as 1702. Lord Cornbury reportedly wore his wife's clothing in public on a daily basis. Legend has it that he wore gowns to formal dances and his wife's funeral. He was once arrested on a false charge of prostitution while strolling along Broadway before his identity was discovered.
A painted portrait of the supposed drag governess resides at the New York Historical Society. In 1952 the New-York Historical Society purchased at auction a full-figure portrait, identified as Lord Cornbury was a royal governor of New York and New Jersey from 1702 to 1708. T...
