Long-Cherished Wish

The writer, Amy Tan, in the story, “A Pair of Tickets,” uses a number of literary techniques in her writing style to produce a personal intimate experience for the reader. The writer reveals a personal discovery and accomplishes a life-long unfulfilled wish of her mother who has recently passed away. Throughout the narration of the story the author uses a blend of colloquial and informal diction, irony, and symbolism to help produce the personal realism and intimacy of her experience. The story, written in first-person narrator, the author being the protagonist, tells the story in present tense, mostly stream of consciousness (we experience the author’s thoughts and emotions in real time), yet at the appropriate times interrupts with relevant context and details to fill out the situation at hand, it provides the reader the feeling like you are with her throughout the journey.
