Literature Essay (ENG 252)

Entry #2:

The white heron in Sarah Orne Jewett’s story “The White Heron” most likely
symbolizes nine year old Sylvia and her innocence as a young child. With little Sylvia
being only nine, she had no strong affectionate feelings for the young hunter that she
might have otherwise had for him. Sure she liked him, but not on a high enough level of
affection that she would give up her purity of heart to him as she might have if she had
been older. Sylvia’s keeping the heron’s location secretly to herself can be directly
associated with her age and no strong emotions that would cause her to give up that part
of her. Her innocence (the white heron).
