Literary Value of "The Guest"

Zoë vs. Daru
In both of the read short stories, the central character is a school teacher. The plot, however, rarely involves a classroom or actually being in the school. Lorrie Moore made Zoë a school teacher in order to explain her personality in the primary paragraphs, but after the reader has become well acquainted with her personality her job position has little reverence to the plot. In the short story “The Guest”, Daru’s position causes the conflict that is necessary to the plot.
