Literary Devices in an excerpt from "A White Heron"

The author of an exerpt from "A White Heron" uses many literary elements in order to dramatize the young heroine's adventure. Among these are diction, imagery, narrative pace, and even point of view.
The author certainly uses plenty of diction within this story. For example, she uses plenty of detail and exaggeration when describing Sylvia's first steps on the tree. "There was the huge tree asleep yet in the paling moonlight, and small and silly Sylvia began with utmost bravery to mount to the top of it, with tingling, eager blood coursing the channels of her whole flame, with her bare feet and fingers, that pinched and held like a bird's claws to the monstrous ladder reacing up, up, almost to the sky itself." She also describes with many words the time at which Sylvia jumped from one tree to the other. She puts seriousness into this move, explaining how every little thing must work perfectly for her to move successfully. "The way was much harder than she thought; she must ...
