Literary Analysis of The Scarlet Letter-Phsycological Force

The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, shows the meaning of truth in a good way, as well in a bad way. It shows what truth can do to a person and to a society. One of the most affected is Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale endures psychological torture because he is afraid that telling the truth will hurt the town and the values and beliefs of the puritans.
Dimmesdale is not so much afraid that he will ruin himself and his ministry, but that he will hurt the town. The puritans have many beliefs about being pure and being true. The church plays a huge role in the town and if the townspeople found out that the minister is guilty of adultery they would all lose hope. They look up to Dimmesdale and they believe if he is good, they must all be good. If Dimmesdale let out his secret the whole town and puritan beliefs would be ruined.
