Linking Genres: Comparing and Contrasting Amadeus and “The Cask of Amontillado”

If the motion picture Amadeus, directed by Peter Shaffer, was to be compared to the short story “the Cask of Amontillado” (hereby referred to as “Cask”), written by Edgar Allen Poe, the results would be quite interesting. Even though these two tales are seemingly unrelated, they actually share many qualities with each other. However, they are not entirely the same, and therefore do not have identical traits. “Cask” is a story about a man seeking revenge against a wrongdoing to him. Amadeus tells of the story of a man plagued by the very existence of the composer Mozart. The three literary elements of atmosphere, theme, and foreshadowing will be compared and contrasted in this composition. The three combine, intertwine, and unite in two utterly distinct stories. This creates some unique parallels, as well as some other new angles to view them by.
