lincoln and friends

In the late 1800s, conflict over slavery had heightened tension between Northern and Southern states. After Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, 11 Southern states seceded (or withdrew) from the Union and set up an independent government—the Confederate States of America. These events led to the outbreak of the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, and Frederick Douglass each had their own beliefs on the issue of slavery. In this essay I will explain why Douglas and Douglass made their charges towards Lincoln and why they believed in them. Next I will give the ways in which I believe Lincoln would have defended himself towards the charges. After that I will talk briefly on why I believe Frederick Douglass’ charge to be closer to the truth about Lincoln than those made by Stephen Douglas. And finally, I will try to evaluate Lincoln’s career and his impact on the fate of slavery.
