Lincoln and Emancipation

The institution of slavery is known as an evil system by contemporary Americans. Americans today are ashamed that such a practice was once applied to everyday life. Although it may be hard to admit, this evil institution was, in fact, practiced by many Americans. Clearly, slavery is not in practice today, meaning that someone or something must have ended the institution at a certain point in history. This someone is Abraham Lincoln, America’s sixteenth president and deliverer of the Proclamation Emancipation. This something was the Civil War, which inevitably brought about this document. William K. Klingaman presents numerous themes in his book, Abraham Lincoln and the Road to Emancipation 1861-1865, which prove to his readers that Lincoln played a major role in emancipating the slaves, including such ideas as Lincoln’s overall desire to keep the union together and Lincoln’s after-war strategies.
