Lighthouses and their Many Mysteries

Lighthouses have many wonderful and amazing mysteries. Although they are a wonderful place to visit, there is much more to lighthouses then just their beauty. Many people know nothing about their history or who ran them and who is currently running them today.
The ancient Egyptians were the first people to use light to guide ships. They would build fires on top of hills by the shore at night, to serve as a warning beacon. Later they put fire in buildings and lighthouses were born. Lighthouses didn’t come to the United States until 1776, when merchants built a lighthouse on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor. Although the British destroyed it during the revolutionary war, it was rebuilt later in the same spot and is still standing. Before the Coast Guard took over, Lighthouse keepers ran the houses.
