Letters to Eleanor

During the time of the Great Depression the First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, receive many letters from people all over the country with requests for aid. Some wanted any clothing the Mrs. Roosevelt or members of her family could spare, others requested money so that they could afford to buy some clothes, pay bills or for visits to a doctor, to pay for education. With parents/ family members out of work people could not afford to replace their worn out clothing, so they begged for others worn and soiled clothing; anything to keep warm.
One letter that Eleanor receives January 1, 1936, is from a fifteen year old girl, M.I., in Alabama. The girl first writes about how she has studied Eleanors family, and finds her family to be one of the most interesting things she has ever studied. M.I. is in the 10th grade and is very smart but she may have to drop out of school due to a lack of clothing (sufficient clothing). That is why she is writing to Eleanor, to...
