These days we tend to look at the classical management theorists and their principles and ideas to determine how a manager acts and works, and why this is so. Lately, “the usefulness of the classical functions for classifying managerial work activities has been questioned” (Carroll, S. and Gillen, D., 1987, p38). In order to prove that classical management theory is needed as a guideline when classifying managerial work activities, this essay will first define what a manager is, and then look at classical management theorists Taylor and Fayol and value their principles.

A manager is an organisational member, who integrates and coordinates the work of others (Robbins, S., Bergman, R., Stagg, I., Coulter, M., 2000, p7). The duties of a manager vary as the level of management changes.
