Let Freedom Ring
Yes we are going to the north!
I don’t care what state,
Just so I cross the Dixie Line,
From this southern land of hate
--“Land of Hope”
After Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War blacks sought after the freedom that was rightfully theirs only to be punished, harassed and abused. Situations in the south were deteriorating, making it more grueling than ever to find honest work. To sickened to struggle for the quality of life they so fairly deserved, most African Americans packed up what little they had and headed north to seek out a new beginning.
The quest for a new beginning also meant they had to leave memories behind. Though some loved memories were being left, ones of why they were leaving were also forgotten. After the Civil War and the emancipation of slaves Southern lands weren’t distributed to the former slaves, now citizens. As landless peasants most blacks inevitably turned to sharecropping....
