Learning from Cavemen

Like the cavemen in Plato’s “Allegory of a Cave,” humans can be in a cave without knowing what’s out there in the real world. A lot of the time, we don’t have a clue that we are even in a cave at all. Because of our nature, we are focused on what is in front of us rather than thinking on a 360 degree plane, and what we don’t see is that there is a whole new world beyond our cave. The light of this new world might blind us at first but eventually we get used to it and see that it is better for us. We have to question and pursue that world to be able to get out of our familiar cave.
The people in Plato’s cave have lived there all their lives. The light from the mouth shines into it but no one can move from their chains to move toward it. They are totally comfortable in that cave because that is the only world they know. Do they question what is beyond the light? Some do and some don’t, like the human race.
