The Essentials of Leadership
Leadership is the art of guiding others toward attainment of critical goals. Leaders demonstrate their own commitment to a vision, communicate that vision clearly, and enlist their followers as partners in that vision. Simply put, leadership is getting people to follow you. If you don’t have any followers then by definition, you aren’t leading. Effective leaders, whether they lead a country or a gang, a sports team or a corporation, must posses and demonstrate the following core critical competencies. Effective leaders know how important it is to be a resource not an authority. They understand how communication leads to focus and focus leads to results. Leaders naturally and without hesitation, invest in and develop their people. Lastly, leaders are asked and allowed to determine strategy and make major decisions with regard to creativity and risk.
