Why do we must stereotype people? As the textbook (Anderson Taylor) explains, when we categorise people based on salient features (skin colour, sex etc), we save the time in trying to know everybody by personality or their secret lovers. It is a social learning of how to deal with strangers, to say the least. So, what is wrong with it? Or, precisely, why is it wrong to stereotype? It is wrong to discriminate on the basis of racism—it makes things unfair for the oppressed. What is wrong with stereotyping is that people want to sound like they are fair and objective, so they should therefore treat everybody with minimal distinction and keep themselves “politically correct.E So, in the view of these “political correctnessEenthusiasts, people of different backgrounds deserve equal treatments whether they’re White, Black, Asians, Hispanics, Native Americans, whatever.
