Last

These days in society, there is a stigma of being last. If you are on
a sports team or running for election, last will not cut it. I often
wonder if it's a horrible thing to be last.

I have watched a few marathons in my time and there is always someone
who finishes last. Usually that person has some sort of handicap or is
very old. When they cross the line, I haven't seen them act like a
loser. Actually, they are very joyful and celebrate more than the
winners do. I see nothing wrong with being last in that situation. In
fact, someday I want to celebrate with the last place finisher.

Being last out of a grocery store or a department store isn't so bad,
either. Have you noticed, when they first open, there is no hurry to
get you out of there. The clerk just meanders around and gets to you
when it's convenient. When you are the last one out before the store
closes, however, the clerks seem to be in quite a hurry to check you
out and get you on your way.
