Las Casas

There is the same theme throughout the account of every place he visits where the Indians die and the Spanish conquest. Though his intentions on writing the account are positive wanting to help the Indians his actions are sometimes contradictory. The purpose is to convince the King of Spain into changing the laws and let the Indians be free in their rightful lands and so he writes an account where there may be some exaggerations of their mistreatment in order to further pursue the Kings decision. This narrative by Las Casas helps implement The Black Legend in Europe stereotyping the Indians as defenseless and innocent while the Spanish are harsh and evil.

Las Casas did have good intentions, he was a subject of God and wanted to spread Christianity. Knowing that war and massacre would never inspire conversion from anyone he decides to try and stop it. He also feels that it is inhumane that the Indians are treated worst than animals when they are human ...
