Medicine in the 18th Century

Medicine in the eighteenth century was primitive compared to advances in medicine today. It makes us think about just how privileged we are and how much we appreciate what knowledge we have today. The following info is about the tools and medicine used in the eighteenth century.
There were many advances in the medicine that occurred in the eighteenth century. Specialized medical instruments (locked forceps) for removing musket balls were developed, but were still not sterilized before use. Pressure sponges, alcohol, and turpentine were used to treat minor wounds. Jail fever, ship fever, and hospital fever were all discovered to be one disease, known as epidemic typhus.
