Knowing and Knowledge


Most people generally think of education as knowing and learning how to use information.

How do we know something? Example: Aristotle knew
a. the earth was flat
b. there were but four common elements; earth, air, fire and water, and the non-earthly, element #5 – the “celestial quintessence”
c. stuff moved around because “it is returning to its place of origin”

I hope you realize that these statements are currently known to be “incorrect,” only because subtle, more detailed observations have been incorporated into the past models that today we know the gravitational Theory. The same can be said of Atomic Theory, celestial mechanics, evolutionary theory, and plate tectonic theory, etc. The older, original forms of the theories were not necessarily wrong; they were simply not well developed due to (a) lower precision (less precise equipment) observations and (b) less rigorous testing and modeling.
