King Leopold’s Ghost
Histories written from the standpoint of biographical stories add a great amount to our understanding of history. Without an understanding of one’s personal experience, it would be very difficult to have any idea of what it was like during that time. By focusing primarily on diaries, speeches and personal essays, it allows the historian to have a first-hand witness. Our history in general was accumulated through many people’s experiences. If it were not for the recordings of events by the people of the time, there would not be any history to our knowledge. Although at times what one sees can be distorted and/or biased, understanding other people’s views allows us to grasp the reasons that may cause one to perceive it a certain way. All of this in the end adds to our understanding of history.
