Growing Up

Life’s events can have a major effect on the shaping of one’s character. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are many occurrences in the book that cause the characters to realize that just because adults act in some way, it doesn’t mean it’s the right way. They begin to question their elders’ behavior. Scout’s loss of innocence develops through hypocrisy, hatred, and foolishness of society.
Scout witnesses many hypocritical points throughout this story. For example, Miss Gates, Scout’s teacher lectured one day about how wrong it was for Hitler to be persecuting Jews in Germany without any reasoning other than their religion (187). This shows hypocrisy because Miss Gates herself is prejudice against black people and thinks Tom Robinson is guilty, even though it is apparent that he didn’t commit the crime. The townspeople deep down know that Tom is innocent, but can’t bring themselves to believe a black over a white. So in turn, Scout ...
