Imagine a solitary man locked alone in a small room. He is chained to a wall, and has no way of escaping. A small window gives him a glimpse of the world. His life is pathetically dismal and bleak with no real human interaction. He hates living like this, but is unable and unwilling to break the bonds which he and others have forged. This is Crooks, the loneliest character in Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Crooks is physically separated from the other characters, but pride and racism also add to his isolation.
Racism is the main reason source of Crook's isolation. "I ain't wanted in the bunkhouse… 'Cause I'm black. They play cards in there but I can't play because I'm black.(70)" The other men discriminate against him because of his skin color, and do not allow him to associat...
