Character Analysis of Jude Fawley

Thomas Hardy’s character Jude Fawley, in Jude The Obscure, is without direction in life. Jude follows certain dreams, but once circumstances turn for the worse, he abandons his aspirations. His system of beliefs works in a similar manner. Once his emotions contradict his beliefs, he drops his ideologies to suit his situation. It is this lack of bearing that leaves him devastated so many times in his life. Three main character traits usurp Jude’s possible success. Jude is detached, unassuming, and unrealistic, which allows circumstances to determine his actions thus leaving him desolate. One reason Jude allows circumstances to govern his life is that he is detached. Jude
