John Ernst Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, on February 27, 1902. After graduating from Salinas High School, he attended Stanford University as an English major. Steinbeck worked his way through college, but never graduated. John left Stanford and headed up to New York in pursuit of his writing career. In 1929, Steinbeck published his first novel, Cup of Gold, but his first book did not get much attention from the public.
