John Quincy Adams and the Fight Against Slavery

The struggle against human slavery was destined to be a long and difficult one. A tradition that started long before America was first colonized and ended long after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, the institution of slavery eventually split the country into two factions who would eventually go to battle in civil war. Countless Americans fought, wrote, and spoke against slavery, all taking their own unique approach to the issue. From Harriet Beecher Stowe to Abraham Lincoln, numerous northerners and southerners, blacks and whites, rich and poor people helped lead the fight for the ultimate abolition of slavery. One of these individuals, the son of a U.S. President and descendent of King Edward III, a man who would one day be president himself, played an important role in this cause. This man was John Quincy Adams.
