In the movie Simon Birch, Joe Wentworth was Simon’s best friend. Simon and Joe became friends because both of them were outcasts. Simon was a dwarf and Joe did not know who his father was. They got along with each other very well and they also got into a lot of trouble together.
Their elders in the church were always scolding them. That is part of why Joe doubted God’s existence. He was a very religious person who always went to church. However, his doubts overcame him and he did not have the faith that he should have.
