Jesse
The book Jesse, by Gary Soto, is about two young brothers; Abel and Jesse who were determined to make a living as Mexican-Americans in the unfair world. Jesse experiences many new and strange feelings, as he becomes independent. Slowly, he comes to know what the world is about, and learns what it is to be envious and insecure.

The hardships Jesse endured not only made him smarter, but they made him more insecure. For example, when Jesse invited his mother to the art show, she asked which painting was his, “[Jesse] lied and told her that [his] was the giraffe poking his head through the hedge.” (128) Jesse was ashamed of what he had become. He couldn’t face up to his mother and show her his real feelings and true self. ...
