Jenny Savili

Jenny Saville's large oil paintings of female nudes were born from her love of painting and strong interest in feminist theory.
Saville works from photographs rather than directly from life models. Often she will merge different images from magazines and medical text to create the figure in her pictures. She refers to these sources to get the right details of flesh tones, bruises, pockmarks and dimples.
The two paintings above are painted by Saville and are typical examples of her work.
Plan is a self portrait in which a naked woman is seen from below. The painting was completed in 1993 and shown in 1994 at the Saatchi Gallery. This was the exhibition that was to make her name ’Young British Artists III’. Her painting plan became the signature image of the show.
