Jane Eyre - Silent Cry

Society today is the battle of the sexes, men and women competing daily to feel important. In life the feeling of importance can be threatening for even the strongest individual, no matter your sex or race. In the novel “Wide Sargasso Sea” this is precisely the case. Antoinette, the main character, is heavily overcastted by threat. She encounters this threat when she is searching for the proper form of recognition from society, from her own family, and eventually from her husband Mr. Rochester.
From the time Antoinette was a child she struggled with being properly recognized in society. Antoinette “One day was followed by a little girl singing, ‘Go away white cockroach, go way, go away’. Nobody want you. Go away” (23). The outside world was a threat to Antoinette, an area that she was almost afraid to navigate.
