JANE EYRE

The Victorian Era was during a time of significant changes. Queen Victoria’s reign made Britain bloom into a powerful industrialized nation. The Queen supported some of these changes – such as the camera, the railroad, and the usage of anesthetics during childbirth (Black, 189). However, did not fully agree with others – such as giving many people the right to vote, creating tax – supported schools, and allowing women to start working professions (Arnstein, 1). Throughout history of many civilizations, cultural beliefs allowed women restricted roles in society. Many people believed that women’s role in life was as a wife and/or as a mother. They considered women better suited for childbearing than in involvement in public life business or politics. Widespread belief was that women were inferior to men intellectually, this belief led to a limit in women’s education to learning domestic skills.
