Jane Eyre

During the first eighteen years of her life, Jane Eyre learns probably the two most important lessons in her life. Discovering how it is all right to stand up for herself and that it is okay to forgive people that treat you with cruelty, Jane changes her attitude towards life and other people.
Through the actions of her cousin John and Aunt Reed, Jane learns how to stand up for herself. Through these negative actions she physically fights back at John. She snaps and can’t control her actions. Most likely, this was because she had held her feelings in for so long that she had no idea how to handle her anger. Verbally, Jane stands up to Aunt Reed. “My Uncle Reed is in heaven, and can see all you do and think; and so can papa and mamma; they know how you shut me up all day long, and how you wish me dead.” (21) Aunt Reed doesn’t know how to react to Jane’s statement and she knows that what Jane said was the truth.
