Jane Decides Only for People

Jane’s life undergoes many changes throughout the novel. Changes in location, changes in treatment, and overall changes in lifestyle. Jane scarcely makes decisions, but when Jane does make decisions it is because it involves a person; weather it is her nasty aunt, Helen, or herself, Jane will decide when a human is involved.
On Page 8, Jane expresses her intimidation of John. Jane says; "… every nerve I had feared him. And every morsel of flesh on my bones shrank when he came near." Jane lives as a victim in fear of John. She will remain living a life in fear unless she decides to make a change. Jane further explains how she is "Accustomed" to John Reed’s abuse and how she never thought of replying to it. Rather than thinking of how to stop the abuse, Jane focuses on how to bear it. Jane has low self-esteem and sees herself as inferior. Jane always accepted johns’ abuse, until one day when John made Jane bleed, That is when Jane decided to make a chang...
