James Gilligan

So far in this class, we have taken different approaches to violence and problems within our culture. Now we are discussing James Gilligan, who in my opinion offers us some truth to the problems within our culture, that mainly relate to violence. He went into the mind of the problem makers within our culture, and allowed them to express themselves. James Gilligan proposes a new way of thinking about violence and how to prevent it. Our society cannot try to come up with conclusions about problems within our society without looking at the roots of most of the problems. Much of that lies in the hands of the troublemakers that reside within our society.
He believes initiating social and economic change to attack the root causes of violence. He supposes that paying close attention to those who are at an increased risk of becoming violent, and dealing with those who are already violent, is a way of helping draw a conclusion to the problems of violence.
