It is time for the British Monarchy to be abolished – discuss

This topic has certainly been under the media spotlight for the last few years, opinion polls abound with the views of the general public but what are the issues? The main protagonists of the case for abolishment suggest it is a natural development needed to reflect and respond to our ever changing society which is now much more diverse than ever before. On the other hand, opinion polls suggest the majority of people feel differently. As recently as May this year, a survey conducted by MORI reported 74% of the population favoured a monarchy (as opposed to a republic).

There are many arguments to support abolishing the monarchy, the main themes include the right to elect an apolitical head of state (to become a republic), the breakdown of the class system and removal of the royal prerogative which allows governments to act without reference to the country’s democratically elected representatives. One aspect that usually gets mentioned in the argument concerns financial matters.
