Scott received the Newberry Award in 1961. O'Dell got the Hans Christian Andersen International Medal in 1972. Summary: The Island of The Blue dolphins is about a girl named Karana Wan-a-pa-lei(The girl with the long black hair) who lives on the island of the blue dolphins. She was a little indian girl belonging to the Indian tribe Ghalas-at. Her father, was the Chief of the tribe. She also had a young brother called Ramo and a sister called Ulape. One day people called the Aleuts, arrived to hunt. Their captain's name was Orlov. They wanted to hunt sea otter. They wanted to camp on their island and split 50-50. The tribe had met the Aleut before long ago. They forced them out from their islands to hunt. But this time the captain promised not to hunt them.
