Is All Discrimination Unfair?

Stanley S. Scott's "Smokers Get a Raw Deal," though a poor argument, is an extremly clever piece of writing. Scott writes clearly, and he holds a reader's attention. Take his opening paragraph, which evokes the bad old days of Jim Crow segregation, when blacks were forced to ride in the back of the bus. Scott tells us to our surprise, that there still are Americans who are forced to ride at the back of the bus. Who, we wonder, are the people who are treated so unfairly--or we would wonder, if the title of the essay ...
